Markfield Community Garden is the foundation of our practice. It has connected us with passionate people from every corner of the community — councillors and creatives, schools and families, gardeners, dog walkers and people who simply stop by to see what’s going on.
The garden has always been shaped by the people around it. Volunteers dig in the rain. People walking past stop to talk and end up planting. Schoolchildren arrive unsure and leave carrying cuttings. Growers share what they know. Artists, photographers and writers document what happens. Food is shared, music is played and conversations turn into new ideas.
None of it would be possible without the local volunteers who give their time, the constant support of the Friends of Markfield Park, and the belief and backing of Haringey Council.

The garden is a constant revelation and a constant challenge. Things go wrong, plants take over, new ideas emerge and new people become part of it. But seeing the effect it has on everyday life — and the friendships, conversations and unexpected relationships that have grown around it — is a constant motivation.
Those relationships have taken Wild City beyond Markfield too. We’ve met teachers, ecologists, artists, activists, gardeners, chefs, apprentices and people working across local government and community organisations. Each brings a different perspective and a different kind of knowledge.
For us, Markfield represents what Wild City is about: what can happen when people with different experiences, perspectives and ideas come together with a shared purpose, under one banner, and make something that belongs to everyone.
